At OfficeMakers we’re all about creating gorgeous, workable office spaces. So bust out your Birkenstocks and granola, it’s time to talk about Feng Shui!
No, don’t! We’re joking! Keep your work shoes on and put that pan flute away! But keep reading to learn how effective office design, elements of Feng Shui, and a positive work environment can improve employee well-being, productivity, and even boost sales!
What Exactly Is Feng Shui? (And How to Pronounce It)
Feng Shui (pronounced “Fung Shway” or “Foong Shway”) is an ancient list of Chinese design principles. The Chinese words “Feng” and “Shui” relate to wind and water as elements, but also to good fortune and protection. See, you like where this is going!
The main concepts of Feng Shui exist to bring positive energy and wealth into a space. It can be applied to homes, offices, and landscaping. In our modern concrete jungle of employment, technology reigns supreme. But the staff experience is more important than ever, as a thriving economy encourages employees to seek positive work experiences, rather than just a paycheck.
The Basics of Feng Shui in Office Design
There are five primary elements represented in Feng Shui. See them in your office as:
- Earth – metal filing cabinets, soil in potted plants
- Fire – lighting, lamps, heaters
- Water – fountains, fish bowls, waterfalls, lush plants
- Wood – office furniture, bonsai trees
- Air – fans, windows, air conditioning, empty spaces
The idea is to balance these elements in your office. You probably have these elements represented all ready; it’s just a matter of having the same amount of each. You don’t necessarily need to have each component in the office. Even an image of the element is enough (a painting of a waterfall could represent water, for instance).
Beyond the five elements, Feng Shui offers other design principles we know to be healthy for your business. Consider these points:
Reduce the Clutter
Clutter muddies up your thought process, creates distractions, and leaves clients with a negative impression. May we suggest our Aspen Home Napa Lateral File Cabinets (wood element), or our Edwin Credenza / Storage Cabinets (earth and air elements) to better organize your office.
Natural Light
Provide enough lighting and maximize natural light. Natural sunlight has been proven to improve employee productivity, reduce illness among employees, and create a happier work environment. So pull back those blinds and let the sunshine in!
Remove Negative Symbolism
Whiteboards and sales team rankings can be motivational to sales reps. They can also be a real bummer to non-sales staff, customers, prospects, and others. Not to mention the self-esteem bash felt by the lowest ranking sales reps. It might be time to re-think your motivation techniques, or at least consider publishing those numbers privately to the sales team in an email.
We’re not trying to tell you how to run your business, but a solid salesperson who continually falls in the middle of the board, in front of everyone, isn’t going to feel challenged to do better. In the modern work world, they’re more likely to seek a sales position elsewhere.
Provide a Pleasant Lobby Experience
A professional, well designed, properly appointed lobby is a crucial point in your business marketing. Provide your clients and guests with a positive experience by implementing the elements of Feng Shui, with comfortable seating, natural light, lush potted plants, and a pleasant atmosphere. You’ll notice the difference in your numbers!
